OK, it's your first published novel. :-) I've read some Patricia McKillip, but not much; I've not read the others, so I can't say how well you did on that score.

Did you ever look at my first effort, Through Darkest Zymurgia? I know we talked about it, but I don't know whether you never got around to it, or have simply been maintaining a diplomatic silence. (Not to worry, if you have been.)

Hi, Will!

Thanks! I'm sure I enjoy praise as much as the next person, so your review was a pleasure to read. I have another ms. just back from my agent, with comments, so I'll be revising that next -- and it crossed in the mail with a third ms. I just sent her. So I sure hope I've done it again, both times.

Incidentally, CITY wasn't my first novel. My first was a fantasy trilogy that will most like never see publication -- and most likely never should. And my second was a massive science fiction tome that, frankly, I still rather like. All together that was about, I don't know, 750,000 words of practice.

When I wrote CITY, I was more or less trying to channel Sharon Shinn (The Shapechanger's Wife), Patricia McKillip, and Robin McKinley. I don't know how well I did at the channeling, but I was pretty happy with the result of the effort!
