The only reason there's any controversy is his rather silly posturing about his research and "FACT". From what I've read, though, his epiphany wasn't "How To Write a Bestseller" but, rather, Sydney Sheldon's wretched The Doomsday Conspiracy which, almost point for point, is constructed the way Brown structures ALL of his books.
